Protest- and Defence Sounds

The "Don't - hurt - me" Sound
This sound (tmn.wav ) is used quite often whenever a chin feels annoyed or cramped by another one. Chins make use of that sound from childhood and they will retain it all their life. The noise indicates, that the chin is harmless and defenceless (poor little chinchilla).

The Protest-Sound
If a chin feels hardly pressed by another one, it reacts with a grumpy noise - the protest-sound. For instance, this may occur at the bowl where several chins fight for feed or if a female gets annoyed by its male where HE gets on HER nerves. This sound will tell the other one something like "Get lost!" or "Leave me alone!" (bedr1.wav)

If the annoyed chin becomes too hardly pressed by the other one, it will react by strong defence-sounds or rage and anger .

The Defence Sound
The defence sound is a very short and forceful call and sounds like <<kack - kack>> (keck.wav ). It means something like "Ouch!" or "Scram!".

A sucking mother often uses this sound if her babies occupy her nipples too much or if they even bite on it.

In Chinchilla-farms, I often noticed very shy chins, which were making use of that sound as soon as a human was coming close to their cages. Obviously, this is the result of captivity and missing affection.
