Mating Sounds

The Mating Sound
Whenever a female chin has her period (cycling), the male courts her favour through odd sounding mating calls (mating.wav). While doing so, the male scrubs the floor with his bottom and tries to attract her attention by wagging his tail (also known as "swishy tail dance").

As a result a very enthusiastic chase begins and the male again and again tries to cover the female. As long as the female doesn't feel ready for the mating, it will fend off the male by grumbling and chattering the teeth (see "rage and anger").

Sometimes, the male looks offended then and complains wistfully. (wistful1.wav)
In wistful2.wav he sounds like a "foghorn" :-))

Both Here and here my oldest chinchilla "Kuddel" squeaks affectionately (and a little bit despaired) for his wife, because he wants to be with her, but he MUST NOT for the following reason: she actually has two babies and needs a break now. So I put her in a separate cage.

The Sounds of the Male thereafter
After successfully mating the female chin, the male utters odd sounds for a couple of minutes. That sounds as if he had the hiccups or as if he would be hoarse.

Afterwards both chins are sitting quietly sleeping on a board and they are cuddling up to each other. That looks really sweet.
